Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters
Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such medications should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become starving," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
